Took the '68 out for a test drive yesterday. Just put power steering and power disc brakes on it.....Noticed there was a lot of sway/roll (don't know what to call it) of truck. I haven't had it to a front end shop yet and am hoping this will cure that. Any other ideas? Also, first time to drive with floor shifter and I am going to have to flip the 2nd and 3rd gear piece upside down, lol. Shifted out of first right to 3rd.......Was pleased that the steering actually works and brakes are a welcome feel, but that sway will get yer attention....
EZ.. a front sway bar (anti-roll bar) from a 75-79 Dent and probably new shocks for better handling. PM me if you are interested.. I've got two extra sway bars.
Here's what it looks like....
The most difficult part is retrofitting the C-brackets to which the endlinks mounts and the radius arms with the indexing notch. Depending on the donor year for the disc swap, yer RAs might already have them.
The drivers side shock was blown...also, I noticed that the right side tire was towed out. Broke it apart and tried to set as good as I can by eye. I did manage to find a somewhat local guy that has ability to align front end. I haven't drove it yet as I put in a new clutch Saturday and got the wrong output shaft seal......
I think the steering box I have came out of a 1970 truck. I read somewhere (can't find now) that it is probably a Ford box. Can I swap it out for a Saginaw at the parts store or will I have to find a kit? The output shaft has some play in it and is starting to leak....I drove again yesterday and it is much better but still has some "slop" in the steering.

I think the mounting pattern holes are the same btwn the Bendix and Saginaw steering gears. A parts store will require for core the same type that you bought.
A "kit"? Not sure what you mean. In any case, quality steering boxes are avalilable through Redhead or Benchworks. However, both companies require cores (unless you eat the cost). I suggest finding one at the JY to turn in. 'Not sure whether pitman arms are the same btwn the Bendix and Saginaw so verify that.
I don't know if this will help. I remember the ol' Ford cars (and I think trucks) Had different steering gear top covers that made it easy to tell which manufacturer made it. I don't know about Bendix but the Ford gear's top cover was bolted down with 2 bolts. The Saginaw was bolted down with 4 bolts.
It probably is a Saginaw as it was the same part # all the way to 79 (didn't check further) but even the guy who ordered it said you want the "Ford" gear when I told him the part #.
Took her out for a drive this evening and it was pretty sweet! Need to change dry rotted front tires and get her lined up. Really dig the floor shifter too.
