So leaving the gas station I heard a loud bang, followed by some hopping. Uh oh lol. Narrowed it down to rear. Pulled the diff cover off and saw two adjacent teeth broken off of the bottom pinion gear, also some chips on the ring gear and side gears. I have a 92 f150 302 4x4 4speed w/od. Pretty sure I have 3.55 gear ratio. I sort of want some advice on what my next step should be. Salvage yard and find same gear ratio and swap? Upgrade to locking diff? Or salvage yard and get higher gear ratio? At this point i guess it depends on what I will be doing with the truck. Thinking maybe a light to medium trail truck. Any answers or suggestions would help. Thanks
Then 4.56's would be of great benefit. However, I would not go any larger than 35's with a TTB axle. Budget? If you change the rear gears to a different ration the front has to be done as well. Unless you have the specialty tools and the knowhow to do gears, it is going to be expensive as well. I would guess with lockers, about $1500-$2k PER axle.
I have a rear with a bad pinion bearing. I don't know the condition of the gears (they're 3.55's)... you're more than welcome to the entire rear end (drum to drum) if you come pick it up (I see you're in shrewsbury - i'm in Annville).
I literally JUST swapped in a new to me used rearend this week. Capital Area 4wd will charge you close to 1k to rebuild, slightly more depending on gear choice. I didn't have that much to spend, so I found a rear and swapped it in. Greble's in Myerstown had a bunch of f150s the last time I was out there. I think they're about $75/rear.
Well the truck is done bein my daily driver. I'm tired of not having time to work on it because I have to drive it everyday. Budget is not the biggest of my worries. I plan on working on it over time so a little here and there. Idk how hard gears are, but I can do anything I put my mind to. Also my uncle is a mechanic so he can give me some scolding, I mean help lol. I would definitely like to go the 4.56 route but I will keep the 3.55s you have in mind for sure. Where would I get 4.56 gears?
