It doesn't do this all the time. The Engine cranks over fine, but won't start. When it does start everything is okay and it runs good with no codes. I noticed that by taking the key out of the ignition, I was checking under the hood, and put it back in the truck fired right up. Also it has never done this to the second driver who has a different key. The truck runs fine at all speeds and loads, even when hauling twenty bags of wet mulch. It's a 2001, 4.6 L, RWD. Could the PATS Chip be failing?
I would say your key is funky if the other key always works. As long as 2 keys still work I would buy a 3rd key and program in before your key is totally shot. You need 2 working keys to program it at home, otherwise you will need a locksmith with a clone machine or the stealer...good luck!
Well it's not the key, did it tonight on the second key. It does it intermentatly, then when it starts everything is normal. I well watch the Theft Light more closely.
About this time, I'd be hooking up a fuel pressure gauge with a long hose and watch the fuel pressure each time. Your symptoms are of a lazy fuel pump that's getting ready to quit but that's not the only possibility.
While you're watching the cluster for the THEFT light, also observe the check engine (Service Engine) light and, if you have a digital odometer, what the odometer is doing during failed vs. successful starting attempts.
this sounds stupid, but i have one key that will start the truck in one positons, but if i pull the key out and turn in over and put back in, it will not start.... does it all the time !!!!!!!
I checked the fuel rail pressure and it was correct. I changed the Fuel Filter and the problem went away. Two weeks ago it was back, I'd put the pressure gauge on and it would start right up. Had the pressure regulator checked. Today I was at the dealer trying to get a switch, and it just wouldn't start. Turns out the Fuel pump had a dead spot on the armature. I'll get the truck back tomorrow. Thing drove me nuts, truck couldn't have picked a better spot to act a up.
Bad fuel pump eh....glad you found it. It always amazes that an armature in the fuel pump is arcing and tossing sparks and never blows up. I suppose with no oxygen the sparks are useless.
