I didn't start smoking because of auto racing sponsors. The "Winston Cup" has nothing to do with that as far as I'm concerned. I also frequent the Nascar boards and it seems that I'm not alone on this. Do any of you know of anyone that started smoking because Winston was the major sponsor of NASCAR???
That's a good point, I doubt anyone started smoking because NASCAR was sponsored by Winston. They might have tried their brand after they started, but start? I doubt it.
It's only a matter of time (and in some places it has already started) before the Busch series will be renamed.
Winston did a lot to help the sport and they would've done more but they were restricted from doing so.
Maybe Winston just figured out that their sponsorship wasn't bringing in any new addicts, which is their business , after all. Why should they sponsor NASCAR if it isn't replacing corpses fast enough? At least you can discuss this topic, without political correctness banning your point of view on this forum.
Unfortunately, PC is what this is all about, when you get down to it. Smoking isn't accepted anymore, so a major cultural icon of the US has to change. With the way things are going, why not just call it the Pot Cup? That is becoming more "socially acceptable" than cig's are.
Quote "I have to agree with jbalestri, it's just not going to sound right if it's not called the Winston Cup". That doesn't bother me any more than the fact that ESPN helped build a huge fan base by showing all those races in the 80's and the last time I watched RPM2nite they weren't even allowed to use race footage! I miss their excellent coverage.
Way back in the 70's I worked for the "Del Monte Corp." which was owned by "R. J. Reynolds" same company also owns "Nestle"
They could have continued to sponsor under either banner if they really wanted to. RJR no longer see's a margin of profit return equal to their investment. It has nothing to do with smoking. It's just business.
BTW: Can someone explain to me why you would quote "Nuke California" When Nextel is based in NYC and the announcement was made in NYC? Or how about NASCAR themselves? I'm sure they must have had.... 50 or more Corporations lined up to kick the kind of cash it takes to run that series. Yea Right!! Get OVER IT! Lets just hope the racing continues to please the fans! Go B0RIS
