Overheating problem fixed . In order to do this I replaced fan clutch which is pretty OK . It has left hand threads on some years so pay attention closely to this. While I was doing this I also replaced the thermostat to . Was relatively easy . Another thing to add is proper oil levels help out a lot and I noticed when mine gets low the temp raises . I was lucky on the head gasket which I thought it was . Thanks for the help everyone.
When you do the heads check the surfaces of the block and head for fire ring wear. If there is any you will need to have the block decked and the heads surfaced. Just got done doing this had to take .006 off the block deck. And surface the heads.
Look around the edge of the cylinder where the steel ring on the head gasket seats that is what I call the fire ring if there is erosion / pitting in that area then the block needs to be decked / surfaced. Same for the heads. These old motors run so much compression that every thing flexes and moves as it heats and cools. Plus the heads usually have some warp in them. Everyone of these I have tore down need to have the block done. The cost is not to high and it helps lessen the chance of blowing a head gasket right after you reassembly it.
