I was talking to my buddy this weekend and he said that he was quoted $2000 to replace the head gasket on his F150. I thought this should be an easy do it yourself but have never done it on one of these. Anybody have any links, ideas or good advice about it?
sounds pretty ungodly high to me. guess it will depend on the shape of your head. probably not an "easy" job, but it can be done. all the accessories on the front of the engine will have to be removed. Everything will have to be taken off the top of the engine and you'll have to remove the intake plenum. The front timing cover will have to be removed from the engine so you'll probably want to remove the radiator too. I imagine you'll want to take the power distibution box off the firewall to make the head easier to get to. The valve cover will naturally have to come off too. Then you can get at the head. All of the head bolts are Torq-to-yeild so they'll have to be replaced when you go back together with it. Youll want to check the head for warpage as this is more than likely what caused the headgasket to go out. You'll have to get it milled to true it up again. Yeah, sounds like a good couple weekends project lol. Others will chime in if i missed anything.
On these trucks it is easier and very common to pull the motor or lift the cab off to replace a head or gasket.
The motor is out of my truck right now for a new set of heads!
The heads sit so far back under the front of the truck,,that it makes it almost impossible to get the new gasket in and the head back on without Fing something up.
It can be done but no one wants to even try it! lol
I would say that's why they told you 2000 bucks!
