Where to replace spare tire?

Mine is cracked and ugly. I need to replace it but I tried several tire shops including Goodyear and none carry it. Goodyear told me to go to Ford which I'm sure is an expensive option.

I've tried searching the Web but nothing interesting.

This is for my 97 shorty but I'm sure I should replace the 96 shorty tire also. I'll upgrade to Explorer 15" rims this winter but with a trailer hitch there doesn't seem to be room for a full size spare tire.

Any ideas?

Jim

96 shorty has about 260,000 miles.
97 shorty just turned 165,000 miles.

What size of rim/tire do you have now on the spare?

There should still be options out there.

Well, I hate to say it, but that size is not available anywhere.

The only manufacturer of that size left is Bridgestone Temporary spare Tacompa PN: 138673 I just did a nation wide search from my supplier, and there are none listed out there.

I would hit up some of your junk yards and see if they might have one in good condition. And with the lack of room on the shorty, I am not sure if you could get a full size spare in there, especially with the hitch.

Just an FYI, if you go with a 145/65R15, there are a few cheap brands out there like Continental, Dunlop, and Yokohama to choose from.

Thanks for the help! I'm concerned that anything in the junk yards will be well past it's expiration date also. I would prefer new so I'll try that other size.

So you don't have your original 14" spare?
By luck I have a recently manufactured T135/70-15 Bridgestone Tracompa mention above, bought from Tirerack Aug '12, that I could easily give up.

I bought it when I transitioned to explorer front brakes/hubs which the stock 14" spare won't fit.
Since then I decided that I should be packing a large/full size if I was to be towing an expensive load into remote locations. For instance, this spare is a bias-ply, no steel belts, and 3" smaller diameter.
By supreme luck the spare is most likely "warehoused" in Sunnyvale, next to Santa Clara, all Silicon Valley. I'll PM when its located definitely.

****** update ****
Yes, 15" spare confirmed in Sunnyvale, OP picked up.
Fyi, iirc Tirerack does not list temp/spares in its online catalog, but it may pop up thru a backdoor Google, or you can call them.
AND this one shipped out of deep inventory or supplier, not their normal warehousing.

With the shorty, you pretty much have to put the spare under the rear seat.

All the JY limited-service spares are going to be well past in their prime. All of mine have had cracks, and I tossed them for full-size equivalents.

On the extendeds, a full-size does fit with the receiver hitch, but on my shortys I never found a good solution other than inside under the last seat.

I bought RojoStar's extra spare and will mount it soon. It is the same size as my existing spare. It seems that model spare tire is the only one still in production.

Carrying a full size spare in the passenger compartment would be inconvenient for our lifestyle. It would be in the way of loads frequently.
