I need help in a bad way. My friend and I rebuilt the engine in my '89 Ranger (2.9v6) and we made a criticle mistake by not installing new lifters and pushrods in the enging. The truck only had 65,000 miles on it and to be honest...they looked great! BUT I am getting that annoying tapping sound coming from the lifters now. Here's were is gets weird...are you ready for this. It makes the noise when I first start it up, but it will go away when the engine gets warmed up. It will sound fine when driving it at low speeds around town for a while, BUT when I get up to 50mph the noise comes back. I tried putting in 20w50 and that made it sound a little better, but the noise is still there. Is there something I should do before I have to start tearing the engine down again? HELP! I really dont want to do all that work to it again if I dont have too. I hope someone can tell me its some kind of simple adjustment or something. Can you adjust hydrolic lifters?

Well, did you use the old lifters on a new or reground cam? If so, your cam/lifters are toast and the cam is going flat. You cannot use old lifters on a new cam; you can use new lifters on an old cam provided that cam is not going flat. You can reuse an old cam and lifters if the lifters go in the exact, same positions that they were in when the cam/lifters were broke in.
