ok quicky question, just out of curiosity can you use a set of "used" lifter on a new cam if they only have 5,000 miles on them? will they re-mate to the new cam? i know it's not worth the risk and better to just get new lifters but i was just wondering.
its possible to use new lifters on an old cam, but NEVER OLD LIFTERS ON A NEW CAM, or any cam for that matter. I had to learn this the hard way cause I was cheap and figured that "one old lifter won't be a problem, I'll just lube the crap out of it". As soon as I started to run the cam break in, it started bogging down in about 10min. Freaked me out so I quickly shut it down and tried to crank her over with a wrench, it was rather hard and I knew that I had either spun a main bearing or worse. Turns out that my old lifter immediately starting wiping the lobe, then the lobe ate through to the plunger in the lifter. Needless to say, 4 lifters were no longer lifting and 4 lobes were no longer...... lobeing.

That's amazing! Why is that? If the lifters are "like new" why would it destroy that new cam even with good grease?
