Need suggestions/advice

I got this Oreilly,s engine. Supposed to have only 300 miles on it.
What do you guys think is the whining sound? The spark plugs are very oily when I pull them out. I'm very bummed right now!

The whining is likely due to steel cam gear. They tend to make some noise until they wear in.
The smoking isn't good, but with that few miles on it, could just be the rings not fully seated. Drive it a while, if the smoking doesn't clear up within another 200-300 miles, that should be something covered under the warrentee.

I would have to agree with you Rouge on both counts. At 300 miles it is not really broken-in yet. Itlives, you should drive it at least another 300 miles to start breaking it in properly. You should mix the driving between highway and city, although I would say more highway. At 500-600 miles I would change the oil and take a good look at it for any contaminants, metal shavings, etc. And like Rogue said, if the issues do not clear up I would contact them about the warranty.

Thanks for the replies guys. The only problem is I bought it from another person and the warrantee is not transferable. But, I contacted him and he's open to taking it back (I think). I'll contact him again today and tell him what you guys said.
Thanks again.

IMHO that is *way* too much smoke for such a new engine, I'd warranty it right now....

The guy got in touch with yesterday. He said the engine would have to be in the the truck he bought it for. Oreilly's does a check up on it after you install it. They have a check list they got over. It's already had that.
The guy lives 200 hundred miles away. It's just too much work and time off to do that swapping out stuff. I guess I'm FUBAR'd again from an internet buy.

There's a company 90 miles away that sells the longblock for $1200. The only other option is to tear this apart and see what's wrong. My only other transportation is a Suzuki Burgman 400. (At least I have other transportation )
Need to make a decision (sp?) soon!

You can do some diagnosing without tearing it apart... a compression test will tell you if any individual cylinders have low compression; a leak-down test will tell you from where they are leaking. Tests like those, they are just what pop to mind; do some Internet research on diagnosis methods.

If you are really lucky, the problem(s) will be in the head only, and that's a relatively small amount of work to deal with.

But the amount of smoke that thing creates makes me raise one eyebrow in a Spock-like fashion, something is really wrong there IMHO.

We did a compression test the day before yesterday.

1- 120
2- 130
3- 135
4- 120
5- 130
6- 130
Wet compression was 5 lb.s higher in all but #6. It was 10 lb.s higher.
What is the compression supposed to be on these engines?

I'll second the too much smoke comment. I must ask, why did the previous owner pull his "new" motor with only 300 miles on it? ~Bill

He said he decided to go with a 460. It's all suspicious to me now. I'm not a happy camper right now...

On a freshly-built engine, I'd expect ~150 psi per cylinder. Those aren't bad numbers, though.

Smoking more on deceleration makes me suspect it'd be sucking the oil in past the valves but I can't say why I feel that way, it's just a feeling.

Is your PCV system correctly hooked up? Is your oil sump by chance overfilled?

I've heard 140-175 psi per cylinder is normal.

I kind of thought the psi's were low. Looks like I'll pull the head and see what's going on in there.
Maybe it won't cost too much to fix. I'll update as I get stuff done.
I really appreciate all the thoughts!

How long has this engine been installed? If the previous engine was pumping a lot oil out the exhaust, that could be a factor in the current smoking issue. It takes a while to burn all the oil out of an exhaust system.
The compression numbers are a bit lower than expected, but that could be due rings not seated.

Drive it for a while, as in 50-75 miles in a single trip, see if that doesn't help cure the smoking. A lot of short trips and/or extended idling aren't good for seating in the rings. They need a bit of heat to wear in correctly.
If all else fails, there's always the old "bon-ami" trick for seating rings........

The previous engine just had very low oil pressure. It was burning no oil.
The previous owner sent me a video of the engine running in his truck. No mention of any of the problems I'm going through. I don't still have the video to go back and really look at it. He said the engine has sat unused for about year.
I cranked it yesterday and revved it pretty good -it wouldn't go over 3000 rpm's because it was cutting out. I thought maybe the plugs were oil fouled but pulled them today and they actually looked better than the last time I pulled them.
I will crank it again today after work and see how it does. I'm hoping it's just the rings not being seated!
