Perhaps the heating coil isn't designed to get that hot? If I recall correctly, it doesn't draw a whole lot of power.

The Open I refer to is like if you were holding both probe tips in the air.
and trying to read Ohms it should show infinity ∞ how ever your meter
displays this. Some should just a set of --- for ∞.
