56 transmission

Hi guys

I have a 56 f-100 with a 272 and 3 on the column I'm in the process of getting the engine rebuilt and wanted to have the transmission cleaned and new seals and gaskets Can someone help me identify the trans and tell me what all I will need? The catalog is showing two trans for that year I'm taking the parts with the trans so want to make sure I get the correct parts

Thanks for any help!

Scott

Might be a Borg Warner T-85. Does it have a curved (rounded shape) bottom on the side cover?

You should have the Ford transmission, if it is the original transmission. Is it top loaded or side loaded? A couple pictures would help a lot.

That is the standard issue Ford transmission. If you are going to tear into it, now is a great time to consider adding overdrive. This was an option in pickups between 53 and 71. In you case you want the normal overdrive as used in smaller engine Ford cars and pickups. There are some differences in the overdrive transmissions used over the years. If you are interested in this, keep us up informed and we can help you get the right parts.

Thanks for that info coupe, is it difficult and/or expensive to add overdrive? What are the advantages? Sorry I don't know a whole lot about trans!

Thanks again!
