hi. i'm replacing my coil with a msd 8205 coil.has the same hookups etc.the general instructions say to put in a .8 ohm ballast resistor but on the msd site it says the resistor is for points ignition.my 86 f150 5.8 has the duraspark(blue module).a buddy told be the truck may have a loom resistor already inline???do i need the .8 ohm resistor???
any help appreciated.thanks in advance,
andy
My 1986 F-150 had a “resistor wire” between the key switch and the 4 pin plug on the left fender well, near the duraspark ignition module. The duraspark ignition needs to uses a ballast resistor or resistor wire for the round coil.
To confirm that your current coil is using a reduced voltage, compare the voltage of the battery positive with the coil positive with the truck running at idle. If your current system is using a resistor wire to power the coil, the coil voltage will be lower than the battery voltage and then you won’t need the ballast .8 ohm ballast resistor.
The resistance wire in the wire loom is 1.1 Ohms which may be a little high for your coils voltage requirement. It should work OK but may not provide the maximum performance you'd get with the manufacturers recommended 0.8 Ohms.
