Harmonic Balancer confusion:

Hey guys, so I installed the 292 tonight on the '54 frame, lookin great:

Turns out the front motor mount off the fairlane was vastly different than the stock '54. it was way longer than it was supposed to be. No problem I removed the balancer, bolted on the original one (after the rust was knocked off and we welded up some extra support...)

As I begin to tighten the balancer back on, it hits the motor mounts and stops.

My balancer looks like this:

And I am assuming I need one that looks like this?

Which means new waterpump pulley and alternator.

And that is IF I can find one. Frustrating.

Is your Y block from a car? Can you modify your mount to make it fit?
I may have a good truck harmonic balancer, will take a look

I have seen lots of Y blocks in trucks with the car pulley setup. Maybe some of the other members will post pictures to clarify.

Do you have the rusty engine in the picture? if so, you have the hard to find parts. I think the back belt lines up the same as your current setup. The front belt runs the fan which attaches at the top of the water pump. That is the same fan base used on the 48-52 flathead V8 pickups, so they are easy to find. If you have the rusty engine, just pull the parts you need from it and assemble away. I'd be very surprised if someone on here doesn't have the fan you need. Picture of the original fan and water pump here (the alternator looks to be in an unusual spot, not the stock location): http://www.barrett-jackson.com/appli...?ln=92&aid=465

How long is the balancer you have now? Do you know what year the Y block is and what it's from?

Some trucks use the same balancer as Ford cars (not Thunderbirds), most do not.

The motor is a 1958 fairlane block, with 62 ford truck heads.

That's nice, but...how long is the double sheave balancer you have now?

Car: 1957 272/292 & 312 (w/o Supercharger) ~ 1958/59 292 could have come with a single (C3TZ-6312-E replaced B7AZ-6312-A) or triple (B5AZ-6312-B) sheave balancer.

1957/59 F100/700 272 & 1957/64 F100/700 292: C3TZ-6312-E .. Single Sheave Harmonic Balancer-6 3/8" O.D. - 6 1/4" damper - 4 1/2" long.

What you could have now is the (5.32" O/A length) double sheave balancer (C3TZ-6312-C) used 1957/59 F350/700 272 & 1957/64 F350/700 292.

There was another double used on 1956 trucks only.

Since the double is too long, you'll need the shorter (4 1/2" long) single sheave balancer: C3TZ-6312-E

There is ONE available NOS...at a dealer in OK .. I'll pass along the info in a P/M if you're interested.

The crank pully needs to be longer so it won't rub on the motor mount

The only balancer that's longer is the triple sheave (B5AZ-6312-B 6.17") used on 1955/59 Y block cars (not T-Birds).

Obsolete: No Ford dealer or obsolete parts vendor has any.

I recognize that engine. That is my 239 Y-Block truck engine. I will look the numbers up on it. But Bill probably has all the answers already.

Edit: That pulley is EBV 6312-A and it is Double Sheave 6 5/8" overall length.

Yup, and since my pulley is about 5 1/2 I think that 1" will make all the difference
