Cab and Bed swap
I converted a 1994 302 2wd auto with 3.08s to a 1996 4.9 4x4 m/t with 3.55 gears.
Total spent so far is a bit north of $1500. Now that's including the parts truck (the 94 flareside for $500), an Aussie Locker ($300), full gasket set, new oil pan, timing set, rust repair, tons of new hardware (the cutting tools are gonna be your best friends), many gallons of paint between chassis and engine, and numerous other bits and pieces.
All in all it was an awesome experience. The truck drives excellent, it's like new underneath, and I can remove just about any part blindfolded.
It will take a while and might cost a bit, but the experience and satisfaction when you're done is worth every hour and penny.
Again, go for it!
it took me 15k and over 5 months of working on this straight(7 days a week and 8 hours a day) to do this. Original engine, trans, axles, cab and frame. Like I said, it adds up

Restoring a truck(which you will be doing that) is EXPENSIVE.
You can buy something nicer to begin with for less than you will have into it
If money is an issue, then restoring a truck is not for you.
Drive your current truck and save your money
But it took me 6 1/2-7 months to build mine, and i couldnt even begin to tell you the time, although i was all in from the begining to get it done and brad and alot of other people here helped me get it right

Including the 7500 i originally paid for the truck,
i know how 22k in it, and stupid, stupid amounts of time, that being said i wouldnt sell it for less then 40 for the fact that i have no interest getting rid of it, but i wouldnt mind doubling my money,
just be prepared to spend losts of time, money, and frustration, you will learn alot, but its really worth thinking about if it is realistic for you
