I am interested in swapping a 1974 ford truck cab and front cap onto a 1972 ford f-350 frame, It is a flatbed with a approximately a 135 in wheelbase, I would like to keep the one ton frame and dual rear axle. I know this will not be a direct swap, but was wondering if someone has done a similar swap, if so what am I getting myself into. One other thing, which frame is heavier the 72 or the 74, because If the 74 is at least equivalent I could swap suspensions and swap rearends. Thanks for any advice.
Well, I can definately comment on the cab swap. Doing a cab swap is pretty easy, provided that you have access to a side post lift. Unbolt the cab, six bolts, two at the radiator, two at the front of the cab (access from wheel well), and two behind the seat. Disconnect the steering shaft, wiring, shifter linkage, brake master cylinder, and....uh....speedometer. I think that's about it. Then, start lifting slowly, making sure that everything is unhooked.
As to the frames....Good question. Since the body styles changed between 72 and 74 I have no idea. The best way to tell is to get underneath of the trucks and look visually and to take some measurements.
If you've got more questions, feel free to ask. I just got done doing a cab and bed swap from a 79 4x2 to a 78 4x4. Not too difficult.
yea, i'll second the cab swap, it is pretty easy and straight forward. i don't kn ow about comparing the frames, i would think theyre different though.
