If I replace the filters all this will go away for awhile.. meaning it will always start with no problems
Got it, and no codes, right? R U finding anything in the filters? How many miles from new filters untill the problem returns? And how many times do you think this cycle has repeated?

Correct never any codes, I would say around 500 miles between filters and it has done it at least 15 times.. I put the air dog on and it went to CO and back around 1100 miles and the it did it again. The Air Dog filter is also bigger. and there is really nothing in the filter, it is hard to blow thru ?? and I have had the tank out also. as well as all new fuel lines with the air dog.
Let me open this can of worms.. What if the battery's are not holding a good enough charge and the cold and draw of the pump is not enough for the FICM to get voltage?

Low bat would set a code. Also, the truck will check them for you. just go key on, or start and hit the center button on the message center then the top button and it will do several self tests including the batterys. It's worth a test but if it was turning over good then the bats are probably not bad. low batterys can do some strange things to thes computer operated trucks.
So changing the filters will prevent the problems for 500 miles and resetting the tuner will reverse the no start condition.
Do you then hit a point where resetting the tuner will not reverse the no start and you must change filters?
have you tried letting a ford dealer read the codes? There are a lot of codes that they can read but the tuner can't. At least that's what a number of people have said on this forum.
Also, i suggest you start a new thread with help in the title. This ones been on here a while and the only ones reading it by now are those of us who have alredy subscribed.

If I do not change the filters it will just get worse to the point it will only start a couple time a day, the as soon as it gets new filters it will go totally away for say a week or two, it also happens more as it gets cooler. during the summer when its 90 during the day and 75 at night it will go all summer, kinda strange.. It has been to the ford dealer never any codes there either..
Also this Morning batt's were at 12.25 volts turned the key on for glow plugs went to 11.5 hit the starter and it dropped to 9-10 volts so I think the batt's are shot also, I will get new ones this weekend.

Yeah, those voltages won't do the job. you may get a pleasant suprise, the new batteries may solve the no starts. But that still leaves you with a miss, right. The cool weather impacts the batteries for sure and makes the diesel thicker, right? as in harder to pump through filters. I still think you have some kind of fuel pump problem. But you have an after market pump and don't use fords at all. So, could it be a voltage to the pump problem? As the filters get debries in them or as the wheather makes the diesel thicker the low voltage won't run the pump strongly enough to pump the fuel through the filters. When you are re-tuning the key is on and the pump should be pumping the whole time. So, you get done re-tuning and the truck starts so you think retuning fixed it. But what really happened was that sitting with the key on for 4 or 5 minutes gave the pump time to catch up and fill the fuel rails and then the truck started. How's that for some wild thinking?? next time it wont start try it. In fact try cycling the key on and off several times like you do after a fuel filter change. But, if that's what is happening it should set a code. mine sets a code when I change the filters and go through the cycling. Besides, if it is low voltage the new batteries may fix it and there won't be a next time.
So i didnt get to get the batt's this weekend.. Still on my list to do. So this morning I go out and it wont start.... Tried like 8 times let the glow plugs warm and ect. so i decided to try to jump it just to see... still wont start keep in mind it is 4:30 am and 35 degrees out side. Check for fuel has fuel at the fuel cooler schrader valve... so i re tune it and still wont start tried like 4 times... I will bet you when I get home it will start right up. So what did I do I drove my 2000 Excursion with a 7.3 and what do you know it started right up.. I love that truck i guess it could still be batt's cuz when I cranked it over with the jumper cable on the other cars lights would dim and you could hear the alternator working so I need to get some new ones.
