my old neighbor bought a wrecked Duramax dually and made his own 3/4 ton Duramax Suburban. that thing was wicked...but still had IFS
I hear you. When I was in high school, in my hometown, there was an 80s era, boxy bodystyle Suburban dually that was awesome. He had swapped in the solid front axle, and dually rear axle and fenders; it was all black and jacked up pretty high. That thing was wicked, but still a gasser.
I bought my '01 X due to just having come from a '94 6.5L Turbo Chevy Suburban 2500 4x4. The truck rode great, but had 7 injector pumps in 6 years. I wanted another diesel in a BIG SUV and the Excursion was the answer. I had been driving the Ford 7.3s since they came out in my ambulances and knew what they could take. I ordered the X and haven't regretted a single day. As I like to say, it's the MOST CAPABLE SUV ON THE PLANET!!!

I too just upgraded from an 95 6.5 suburban to an 03 X with 7.3 two weeks ago. I love the X
Because my wife told me too. Honestly, I loved it but was worried about the fuel mileage on the V-10. Originally belonged to my friend's dad. My friend inherited it when his dad passed. He and his family used it for a while. Until their circumstances changed and they decided the Excursion was the vehicle they'd be parting with. So, got a swinging deal on it, and it's great. We go out nearly every weekend to chase and fly in hot air balloons. Living in the desert, recovery can sometimes be a challenge and I'd much rather ha e a solid axle 4WD any day. We also like to go camping, working our way up to remote sites away from people and the hustle. The Ex not only provides some reliable means of getting there, but our six, yes 6 kids are comfortable and safe. I call it our small APC. The wife did a lot of research, as did I and she was very satisfied with the reviews given by owners. Definitely one of the best vehicle purchases I've ever made. Once she graduates college, we'll be looking for another one.
I bought my Excursion because I was wanting to purchase a travel trailer and wanted something with both towing capacity and passenger room. With six kids we wanted to be able to ride in the same vehicle when we went on trips.
I always wanted one so when the 96 4 door cab 4x4 F250 was too small to haul 6 people to Yellowstone and back comfortably, I went looking for one. Got an 03 limited V10. I was wanted better gas mileage than the F250 and I got it with the Excursion getting 13 mpg and the F250 got 10 mpg. After we bought it my wife almost won't let me drive it now because she drives it. Love it!!!
I have a Corvette, you know what people say about people who drive Corvette? To compensate the small #$%^. I have to over compensate mine, so King of SUV it is

Our dogs are to precious to ride in the back of a pickup truck, she demanded that they be in a temperature controlled environment not separated from me.
