HELP! E4OD Tranny SHOT???

I have a 1993 F250 with the 7.3 IDI and E4OD tranny...I purchased the truck about 7 months ago with 186K and it now has 207k!!! I do tow 4-8 thousand pounds about 40% of the time. I stopped at a store tonight to grab a drink and left the truck running and when I came out I put it in reverse, no problem. Put it in drive, NOTHING (I was not towing anything)! The boss man towed the old girl home for me! During these last 7 months the tranny coughed up fluid a couple of times but I was told by a mechanic that was not abnormal for these transmissions. I added more fluid each time, let it cool down and she did fine. Also, the tranny seems to run hotter than I would think it should (you can smell it once in a while). What is wrong with my tranny? I still have reverse but that's it! Also, if the tranny is gone and I expect it is, should I have someone rebuild it (I can't), or should I go with another type of tranny if that's an option? I want something dependable and stout, even if it costs a little more. Thanks for looking guys and I really value any input you can offer!

one of the many reasons I wont own an automagic. . . .is that there are so many different symptoms of a failing/failed trans that make it difficult to diagnose unless you work a particular trans religiously. and, when you take it out to fix one problem, "misewell" rebuild it before something else happens.

strength, reliability, cost effective, simplicity (easy to diagnose and repair), enhanced control/drivability = manual transmission

if it were mine, a zf would be going in.

do you have manual 1 and 2?
the mechanic was incorrect.at no time should it ever be considered normal for the e40d to overflow and leak fluid.that was a sign of overheating/front seal leaking and should have been addressed.it would most definitely be abnormal trans function.you know who not to have reman your trans now at least.

Overheating could be a result of a clogged oil cooler, these things run hot as it is and really should have an auxilary cooler as well so start by blowing out the cooler with compressed air, and also pull the codes to see what is flagged. This trans is also completely computer controlled and it is programmed to make the trans do some strange things if it loses contact with one or more of the critical input sensors.. speed, throttle position, shift lever position.

sounds like you found a good place.i had the same done and for the same $. also by a guy who has many years experience with the e40d.also like you, found locally.
http://absolutetransmission.com/

i got the hd reman along with a triple disc billet converter (with extra low stall as per my request) and it was installed with the large tru-cool aux cooler and thermal bypass and the transgo tugger shift kit.

as for replacement radiator,i like the copper/brass replacements sold at advance auto (or online, and am sure many other places.)

trans cooler that came with my reman trans:

no problem.i asked him about the billet shafts etc like bts and jhon woods use etc in the all out builds and he said, yeah i can do that too but it would just be a waste of $ for the idi's power.said even the chipped psd's (4r100) he doesn't even do that for the heavy haulers and snow plowing trucks.i got specs met to match those hd r4100 builds he does for those and those have been holding up around here for years,so it was likely a bit more than needed for an idi truck, but what the heck,i work it hard too so it's good to have a hd trans.a bit overkill is much better than not strong enough.just ask what he'll be replacing/updating to see what your $ is getting ya from your guy.
be sure to grab a trans temp gauge.install the sender @ the test port and keep trans temps between 175-225 and flush every 20-30k and you'll be good.
good luck!
