I just put a new tranny in the truck and when I put it into reverse it doesn't grab until i rev it a little, then it grabs like a champ. The fluid is full. I drove it 20 miles and it is 3/4 into the hot side on the dip stick. Is there anything I need to adjust or anything?
Alright, I posted earlier that reverse wasn't working right. Now I just did a dump run and on the way there it didnt want to shift out of first so I let of and then it shifted. Then driving in second it gave it some gas and the rpms went up then finally after a few seconds it grabbed. Once I was in fifth it drove fine. Another time it took about 5-10 seconds to finally grab. When I got home I checked the fluid level and it was over serviced a little. Was it because it was over serviced or any other ideas. I dont have time to work on it because I work night check. Thanks for the help in advanced. BTW the tranny now has 30 miles on it.
sounds like you got something sticking in the valve body... Whoever did your trans prolly got sloppy and globbed some silicone inside the pan or something and it's sticking up the shifting valves. IRRC revving it up will spin the pump faster and create more line pressure... and that's probly blowing the blockage out of the way to let it shift. I'm no auto trans guru, but from what I do know, that sounds most likely. Contamination of some sort in your valve body.
The gasket is a cork gasket if your talking about silicone from the oil pan. If there is other silicone used some where else though I dont know. If that was the case do you think that would be somthing a mechanicly inclined person could do?
I have never work on an auto behind a 7.3 but I have replaced a C-6 behind a 460 in 86 model truck and had similar issues. It turned out that the shifting linkage was a little off and required me to loosen the linkage and readjust it. After that it would drop into reverse just fine and shift like it should in drive. So if it has manual linkage than you might want to check that, to insure each gear is engaging fully.
I'll see what I can do with the linkage tomorrow. Do you think that could be the shifting issue too or is that a seperate problem?
In my case with the c6 behind the 460 it was. It would take for ever to go in reverse and you would have to rev the motor to around 2000rpm and the shifting in drive was slugish at best. I was super mad at first because the tranny was $800 to rebuild. But the linkage was only off about an 1/8" and was night and day difference and shifted like a champ. I didn't even touch the length of the linkage when i removed the old tranny it was just a slight difference in the rebuilt one that made the change. Hope this helps.
I adjusted the elcectrical shifter all the way forward and all the way back and in the middle and still the same thing. havent drained any tranny fluid but it was perfect on the cold side in the moning as soon as i started it.
