Need your expertise yet again....

Hello folks:

I'm posting in this forum because I have a tranny problem, and my tranny guy is adamant that it is a motor problem of some sort. First off, 94 F-150 300-6 E4OD. Here's the problem. When I find myself having to shift back and forth from "D" to "R" repeatedly (like getting into a tight parking spot), the transmission hits especially hard when I go into reverse. I took it to my tranny guy, and he noticed that when he takes it out of drive and into neutral, the idle would surge momentarily and then gradually come down. He said it shouldn't do this....that the rpm is surging....and that's why the tranny is hitting harder than it should. The tranny works perfectly when it's on drive and I'm just driving regularly. And, if I have to go into reverse, I can sit there for about 3 seconds or so, wait for the surge in idle to come down, and then engage it reverse, and it won't hit. Now I'm thinking he's right. So this where I need some advice....what do you think could be causing the slight surge? Are there some relatively simple checks I can do before I have to take it in to a mechanic? Any help would be appreciated.....

You know.. this isn't going to help you at all, but electronic automatic trannies are so complex now that they're almost impossible to properly diagnose at times. Throw a manual in there and be done with it ;-)

Sorry, I'm just PO'd from the last truck I had with an auto tranny

You know, this is my first ford truck and my first experience with the infamous E4OD. Had I known I was going to go through so much with this tranny, I might have backed out on buying it in the first place. Or, I could've at least shopped around for a manual before doing the rebuild. With that said, I now love Ford and love the 300 too much to get rid of it.....and $1500 later, I've got to get this tranny to give me some decent amount of miles to feel like I got my money's worth.

I think I read somewhere here in FTE that before taking your E4OD-equipped truck in for a complete rebuild, you should make sure everything is working perfectly with the truck. Like you said, it is electronically-controlled and therefore very complex. I'm fixin' to take it to my regular mechanic to run a full diagnostic on it and check everything. I want to rule all that out so I can be sure that it is the tranny. In the meantime, because I'm a little impatient, I think I'll go to Advance Auto and get myself on of those little $30 scanners and see if I can pull some codes.

Please keep us up to date as you progress.

This coming from a guy that hates his E4OD and can justify the $2200 (Cdn) to rebuild it.
First F-150 like the 4x4...I feel it hasn't the punch (more like a lag) because of a failing tranny. No codes ever. Just harsh engagement, mushy shifts, very bad towing torque.

Ok....I feel better now. okay....maybe not.
