e4od tranny

hey guys i think my tranny is about done. i bought the truck about
8 months ago . f250 psd auto e40d 144,000 miles. truck drove fine home.
the next day put in reverse to back out of driveway and then into drive
and nothing. it went into gear slowly , but driving down the road i had
a vibration. pulled tranny pan and fluid very dark, but no shavings
on magnet. truck did ok after fluid change. and then going down the
road about 45 mins at 70 mph od light flashing. had to limp home.
had 1728 slippage code. someone told me a bad torque converter.
i can pull tranny myself. how hard is to rebuild myself. any ideas or
suggestions would be greatly appreciated. any tranny techs in
greensboro, nc area

thanx

steve

Have you ever rebuilt or even seen the inside of an automatic tranny, especially a big dog like the E4OD? I thought of trying a rebuild myself until guys that build entire "one-off" cars said they wouldn't think of trying it. For some people it may be doable. I'm pretty methodical and what not but the inside of that monster seems pretty scary. You have to think about things too like if the bands get scratched or bent too much one way or the other then you will have a problem if it isn't caught before you complete the build. You can "warranty" your own work with your time and money or you can pay somebody who has done it many times who will warranty the work against their time and money. Just my .02. Hope ya get it fixed.

I always cut open the trans filter to see how much junk is in there. All your clutch pack material will get trapped inside the trans filter. metal will stick to the magnet. A little bit over 30k miles is to be expect according to my local tranny shop, lots is a internal issue.

As for rebuilding, you need speacial tools to pull the insides out otherwise your prying on stuff breaking stuff or dropping components back in the case instead of easing them in.

A tranny swap is best in mind.
