Can't help you on this but just to show what can happen, at one time I had a 79 Olds Cutlas with a 260 ci diesel. Cylinders went bad and the short block was replaced under warranty. They put in a 350 ci diesel short block, using as many original parts as possible. I don't know how many pieces interchange between the 4.6 and 5.4 but if there are any casting numbers on the block, heads etc they might give a lead on what you have.
I thought the only difference in the 4.6/5.4 was the longer piston stroke that gave it the more cubic inches. I'm no expert but I wonder if someone slapped the wrong sticker on at the factory. You never know...
replacing motor because of head gasket leak? And yes the 5.4 and 4.6 share the same block and other parts. The 5.4 has bigger heads to allow for a longer stroke.
4.6 and 5.4 share most of the enternal parts. the blocks are not the same, they are the same bore but the 5.4 blocks deck is a little taller cause the 5.4 has more stroke. which puts the intake spacing further apart, which wont allow a 4.6 intake to go on a 5.4. pretty sure cranks and pistons are the same , rods are longer on the 5.4.
