Can't get my filter and cap to go back down. Removed the oil filter, drained the oil. Snapped my new OEM filter back into the OEM cap and I can't get it to go back down far enough to the housing threads to start screwing back in. It's like the spring won't compress to let it go back in correctly. Any ideas how to fix it?
Your sure it an OEM cap?
If so I would take the filter back out and look to see
if there is something stuck in the top of the cap.
Then check the spring assemble to see that is
will move. The filter sits down on a valve at
the bottom of the housing and if that is stuck
that could also be the problem.
Yes, the cap is OEM. The problem is the filter itself. The new filter doesn't have the 4 ***** (or whatever they're called) on the inside top of the sleeve. They depress four tabs at the top allowing the spring to compress. I bought the filter at Walmart, but it is a Motorcraft filter. Is there a difference in them?
There are two styles of filter I found this twice once on my bosses truck and when I bought the filter for mine. One for the type with the spring on top and one for the oil filter housing where it doesn't have the spring on the post. Mine came with a slip of paper with pictures telling me about the two styles. I bet you have the wrong one. Take your old filter and see I'd you can still read the part number and check they are the same.

I've NEVER seen but one OEM filter--FL2016 is the Motorcraft number and it's always been the same. I know the filter housing standpipe was changed but there was never a filter change. Are you referring to an aftermarket filter? I know NAPA lists 2 or 3 different filter types, or they used to.
Problem solved! Went back to WalMart to compare the filters. Here's the difference(s) that I found between the 3 filters that WalMart sells;
1) Motorcraft FL2016 - This is an exact fit.
2) Fram CH9549 - Comes with an adapter that goes on top of the stand-pipe.
3) Fram Tough Guard TG9549 - This is also an exact fit.
So apparently, someone did indeed put the wrong filter back into the Motorcraft box....and I'm the lucky one who found it. I'll be sure to open the box next time to confirm that the correct filter is inside.

Oh man, what an *******. I never thought about someone doing that. They saved money by doing that. Jerk offs!
I would suspect the two Frams have been swapped also. The ToughGard to my recollection is the one that should have the adapter.

I compared Motorcraft to the ToughGuard, and they were identical. Same height, same end plates, identical numbers stamped on the endplates, except Fram had added their part number to the ToughGuard filter. There was no notible difference in the two filters.
Then I compared the Standard Fram CH9549 to the ToughGuard. There is a clear difference. The endcaps are different. The height isn't the same. And the standard Fram has no patent numbers on it anywhere. In the past, I've found genuine Racor filter in CH9549 boxes, clearly that is no longer the case.
The filter swap thing happened to me at Chinamart before. Since then I always check the box. Wouldn't you think after this had happened to them enough time that they'd seal the boxes?
