2WD boxes have a longer sector shaft (inherently weaker) and mount aft of the driving axle with a 3-bolt mounting point, with the gear box well above the frame creating additional rotational/torsional forces on the box/frame.
4WD boxes have a shorter sector shaft (inherently stronger) and mount fore of the driving axle with a 4-bolt mounting point, with the gear box parallel to the frame decreasing rotational/torsional forces on the box/frame.
