4.2 V6 MPG

My brother has a 98 ext cab 2wd with the 4.2 v6. He is only getting about 13.5 mpg with solid highway driving. What is the average that you guys are getting? And are there any proven ways that you guys have increased your mileage?

If I stay under 70 I do much better. I raced to work all week around 75- 80 and checked my mpg and it was close to 12. 65 mph I can get 18 for a freeway trip. He may need minor work such as plugs, mass air flow sensor cleaning, fuel filter etc.

Thanks for going out there and giving me some real world test on what your truck is doing compared to what my brothers is doing blueeyes. I can tell you we have done a tune up on the truck in the last few months. Can't remember exactly but it was this year. We were trying to see if that wasnt the problem with no avale.

But I also can't speak for how fast he drives on the freeway either. That might just be the ticket. He may just need to leave 5 or 10 mins earlier and take it easy. I'll recommend he try that and see what he comes up with.

But I also think there may be a few other things that can be done to improve his mpg. It shouldn't just be that he drives 65 versus 75 and be able to increase the mileage by 5 mpg. That's just crazy to me. I can drive my wife's car at least 10 mph faster than she does on the same route that she takes to work and actually get better mileage than she can doing it all week. There just seems to be something else that might need to be done. Again thanks for going out and putting your foot in it for a little extra info.

Perfect example, my dads GMC serra half ton 4x4 w/ 4.8 liter v8 is a truck that has been on a lot of Florida trips. Time and time again after setting the cruise it gets 20 mpg at 65 mph and 16 mpg at 70 mph. Trucks are more touchy due to speed with changes in fuel economy due to bring geared lower so the faster your going the engine may be revving pretty high. Also your fueling an engine which was built around torque, towing, and off road capibilitys just something to think about

Also just checked my last tank of gas for my fuel economy. My mixed driving back and forth between work (mostly freeway but some city short trips) was 16.65. This was at speeds 70 mph but mostly lower.

I'll get 20 in my 01 on a long cruise at around 65-70, but drops significantly if I go any faster.

I think my 99 used to get more than 20 on the highway, back in its better days.

Around town is 15, sometimes less (20 stoplights in my eight mile drive to work)

Thanks guys. I'll recommend he try going to work for a week driving between 65-70 and see if that doesn't make a difference. Like I said before though I can't say exactly how fast he drives but I'm pretty sure he stays above 70 and his trip has several hills he has to climb.

Just checked my mileage after I drove 150 miles. Gas randmomly dropped to 3$ a gallon so I felt I had to get as much as I could in my tank and gas can. In that mileage 90% highway I got 17.9 mpg! I check my mileage when I can. But l know I'm not the only one that feels some times it is hard to fill your tank when your paycheck has not come yet. I try to check from 1/8 to full but some times I fill up and end up checking it before then

Well I got a chance to talk to my brother a little tonight and he said he drives between 60-65 on the highway. And is still only getting about 13.5. Like I sai in my last post his commute has a lot of hills too. He has also had a recurring check engine light saying he has a lean condition. I can't remember if it was just one bank or both. We have changed the plugs, wires, found a bad coil, and put new intake gaskets on. I don't know if this will help but we need to try and figure something out. He is in serious need of better fuel economy.

How much as a percentage of city to highway miles is he driving? The hills definitely have an effect as its almost like he is hauling a trailer. In order to clear some of those hills he may be having to apply a lot of throttle. Kinda surprised he still should be getting better. Gotta be something. How large are the hills?

He drives about 85 to 90% highway. And the hills are that he drives are only 100 feet or so and not really steep. But most of his commute is up and down those hills. They don't really flatten out until a few miles before he gets to work.
