More power without upgrading trans?

I'm looking for a better cam for the 88 in my sig. It is efi and is stock except for the exhaust. I would like some more power from this truck and didn't get much in the engine forum. My transmission shifts well and I think it was rebuilt shortly before I bought it but only to stock spec.

I would like some more go pedal response and some torque for towing. Please tell me how I can get some more power out of my truck without yanking my trans.

Here is what I have as a parts list so far. I'm new to these 460s, but not to engines. (Go easy on me)

Long tube headers
True dual exhaust
Upgraded air filter
Upgraded intake

Here are my questions:

What is a good open air filter that won't let in dust? I live in a dusty area so a good filter is very important!
What would be the best cam to put in this for my needs?
How can I get a little more fuel going to the motor?
Is a cam something I can do myself or am I better off hiring it done?

Skip the open element air filter. Unless it's going to be used exclusively for racing and the engine will be torn down yearly, an open element has no place on a truck being worked in a dusty environment. The stock airbox flows plenty for what you need.

You need to stick with an EFI compatible cam, typically an "RV cam" that works best from idle to 5500 (or whatever) is best. If you're detail oriented, patient, and know what you're doing a cam is a doable thing. The intake manifold does have to come off and the front cover + timing set needs to come off as well, so there is some depth to it.

An adjustable fuel pressure regulator will allow you to turn up the fuel pressure and increase the amount going in, however that alone will not generate more power. The engine needs to be able to use all the fuel going in, otherwise it's just going out the exhaust as waste. The computer handles all the fuel metering in your case.

Thanks for the quick reply. If I get that regulator, how do I make that extra fuel burn? Hotter spark plugs?

I've heard of rv cams, but wasn't sure what to get. Where is a good place to get one and which would you suggest I get?

You don't need more fuel until you swap the cam and/or add the headers.

You should consult with an experienced mechanic when doing the cam.

You can consult with the cam maker for what they recommend for your motor.

Why do you believe there will be an issue with your transmission? You are not going to be able to add enough power to this thing to make the transmission complain, unless it already has issues.

You didn't go back on your other thread, but you heard basically the same thing there. There is no "magic" to turn your EFI motor into some kind of fire breather, and still retain the stock EFI.
