460 Build

So. i am very much a "noob" to really working on cars. I have done some simple things; clutches, transmissions, brakes and a couple engine swaps.. But time has come where i need to put my own engine together..

Its a 90' 460 i took the heads off in thinking head gasket was bad. Coming time to put it together. and I'm afraid i may have the Push rods out of order where they originally came from and same with head bolts(book says you can reuse them by keeping them where they came from)
Wondering how big of an issue this may be and what i should do/if anything?

Also. i broke an exhaust manifold bolt inside the head.. thinking i need a machine shop take it out. while they are at it, have the valves ported?

Engine going in a 95' f250

I'm not typically a fan of re-using head bolts, for the simple fact that they are designed to be torqued down once. After that they have been stretched and the actual clamping force may be different.

So long as the pushrods are the same length, straight, and aren't damaged you *should* be safe reinstalling them even if a few are in the wrong spot. All the valvetrain components wear into each other so *technically* they should go back with their corresponding rocker arm and lifter, however I don't think it is as much of an issue as making sure the lifters stay in the correct spots.

Safest bet is having the shop remove the bolt, then there is less risk of damaging the head. Have the heads gone through and pressure checked and inspected for cracks, and have them do a valve job if needed. Gasket matching should be sufficient and can be done yourself if you are patient and work slowly.

What "blkF250HD" said is pretty much exactly what I'd also say.

Don't reuse head bolts.

Should be fine reusing any pushrods anywhere as long as they're totally straight.

Have a good shop remove the bolt and check the heads out. Might as well get a valve job while they've got the heads if they suggest it. Maybe get them to port the heads a little if you're looking to pick up a little power.

You can get a full set of head bolts through a Ford dealer for around $60.

I've re-used many sets of head bolts.
These aren't torque to yield or appreciably necked like some.
Would I reuse them again and again? No.
But remember, you're not building a high compression stroker pushing 1,000 HP.
You don't need the fancy 12 point ARP fasteners.
