i am trying to take the heads off my 460 motor and cant seem to get em off....... i took off the rockers and all the head bolts i think there was 10 on each side ....but the heads still wont budge ..not one bit....anybody have any ideas? thanks kevin
Originally posted by ZRX61 BUT!! make sure ya have a couple of the head bolts screwed halfway in so it doesn't fall on you foot, those things are damn heavy.
I second that suggestion. Dropping 75lbs. of cast iron on your foot is not pleasant.
Another way to break the head gasket seal is to pry the head up using a big screwdriver or small prybar between the block and head. Look on the side of the engine. There is a little recess cast into the head right in the middle where the block and head meet. It's right between and below the center two exhaust ports. My 73' heads have this recess. I'm not sure about late model heads.
Heh heh heh.... in the past I've had to go as far as taking an engine lift and jerking the head off of some old Poncho motors!!
Honestly, a crow bar stuck down the heat riser port works best for me...I have a "special one" I use ONLY for jerking heads off with...I've just grown fond of it since 1968... (it was the first one I used when doing apprentice engine work at Boomershine Pontiac)....
