Anybody know of a good source of info on decoding the engine serial #s? I have found little bits of info, but I can't find a complete decoding source. One of the engines I have on a stand in my shop is a '95 and I was told it came out of an ambulance, which I thick is true because I know it's a van engine, and it has the HUGE upgraded alternator on it. With what info I can find on the serial number, I have figured out that it is a 95.5 engine, which a dead give away for that is that it has 10 bolt intake plenums and not 8 bolt. I also found out that the 95.5 engines have the newer style front cover and IPR without the edge filter. The serial # is 7.4JU2U190411. The 7.4 is suppose to be the displacement, which doesn't make sense because I thought it was 7.3, but I think they all start with 7.4 The J I think is what plant the engine was built in....the U is USA....the U2 is what vehicle it was used in, and the 190411 is the serial #. I have found out that anything 187100 and up to what ever number begins the '96s, is a '95.5, or "late '95". I'm just curious if the U2 means it was used in an ambulance. I'd love to find a good decoder for these engine serial #s.
I have a book somewhere that tells of differences in 7.3's of different generations and the serial numbers where changes took place. It doesn't say anything about the vehicle the engines were used in though..
