When this thread started, I grew a goatee and everyone liked it. After Thanksgiving I shaved my goatee and started growing a full beard. Of course at the age of 52, it's all salt and pepper but the compliments I'm getting are really cool.
I think I'll let it go till spring. Then I'll have to shave, it'll simply be too hot in the summer carrying mail.
I keep my beard between 3/8" and 1/2" in the summer, and 1/2" to 1" in the winter. That summer length is long enough to look like a beard (as opposed to the "I haven't shaved this week" look of closely cropped beards) and I haven't found it to be too hot. In the winter, I let it grow a bit more and it does keep my face warmer. Someday, I intend to let it grow to a full 4" to 6" beard. Since it turned white some years ago I'm going to double as Santa Claus all winter.
I just shaved mine off for the spring. It's too hot to wear a full beard and carry mail when the weather breaks.
2.5 weeks to go for me. I can't wear one when it's hot out, either. I shave mine for Easter. My wife is starting to threaten to take some scissors to it while I sleep--I haven't trimmed it since I started growing it in mid-September (it's a solid 3.5").
