NOW WHAT??

So yesterday, I drove my 1970 Ford F100 for a 100 mile trip. When I got home I checked under the hood and there was motor oil all over the side of the engine. It's apparent that the oil is coming for the dipstick tube. The truck has a 300 straight six and runs pretty decent with the exception of some engine vibration at higher speeds. So I was wondering what would cause oil to come from the dip stick tube? I noticed a few weeks ago that the stick was loose so I gently crimped the end so I would not back out of the tube. I don;t remember having an o-ring located in the inside of the dipstick? I have installed a oil pressure guage which show good old pressure and just completed an compression check with all cylinders being above 130.

Any ideas on why it's puking oil out of the tube. I'm almost 99% sure it's coming from the oil dipstick tube as it happen a few weeks ago before I crimped the stick.? Would the vibration come from my worn out rubber motor mounts?

Thanks

Jim

First(and easiest) thing I'd check is the PCV system. Valve could be stuck or hose crimped.

^^ This.

If the PCV is not drawing vacuum out of the engine, then all that pressure has to go somewhere. Usually popping the dipstick up enough to blow oil film out.

My first 428 used to blow the filler cap off by the time I got to third gear(driving it hard). Lots of blowby(bascially motor was worn out).

Thanks, I checked the PCV valve and hoses, no crimps and valve has a rattle to it. So basically it sounds like I have a lot of pressure built up and no release?

How are your PCV hoses hooked up?

Positive Crankcase Ventilation (PCV)

Make sure there is not a mung build up in the hoses.

I'll check the routing when I get home. I know I have some off the manifold and also the carb? How would you test to see if the PCV is good? I took it off and it rattle so I'm to assume it is good?

I read the attached thread, very good info to know. When I get home I'll check out.

With engine running check to make sure there is vacuum at and going through the PCV valve.

It would be one or the other. You will get vacuum off the carb and manifold. One side, where the PCV valve is connected, goes into the manifold or carb. The other side is a source of clean fresh air to go into the crankcase. If you are hooked up to two vacuum ports, you should be sucking oil big time in the one without the PCV. Hard to tell without seeing it. Good luck on a fix.

Couple weeks ago I notice an oil leak and thought it was coming from rear/bottom of the engine. Turns out the oil filter had a small hole in it and was shooting oil towards the rear/bottom of the engine. Not sure how it got there, something from the road? Could only see it leaking when the engine was running.

Probable not your problem but only takes a second to check.
