7.3L powerstroke problem

Got a 01 7.3l powerstroke, Wednesday I noticed @ roughly 50 it seemed like the truck went into neutral and back into gear real quick

Today the truck jerked at 55, like a quick downshift and couple miles down the road it died at the light but I fired it back up.

Could this be the cps issue?

I have been pretty good with maintenance on this truck , I was planning this weekend to change oil/fuel/air filter before this started happening

If the engine remained running I would think from your description that you have transmission issues. CPS intermitently will kill the engine but not make any "gear changes".

I was thinking it was tranny issue at 1st,checked tranny fluid level looked clean

Would a bad tranny cause the engine to die at stop light?

but the truck died couple miles down the road at the stop light after it did the jerk/skip

No Check engine light

Truck has 270 thousand miles I bought it at 230

No I doubt that a trans problem would kill the engine unless the TQ was locked while in gear. Did not see that engine quit. Might be CPS issue but others way more up to speed than I am will chime in

These sound like another description of the hic-cups, and it could be a cps. Only takes a couple minutes to put in your spare.

Thanks for the replies and help, before I left for the day I did notice the positive battery cable on the driver side was loose, I tightened it up, but other than that nothing out of the ordinary, I drove the truck today but with o/d off, so far it drove fine, I will put in a new CPS and see if anything funky happens,

change your transmission screen, gaskets and put in fresh fluid. when you change your cps get one from either your local dealership or riffraff, do not get one from autozone.

You could have more than one problem.

Never hurts to put in a spare CPS, it can cause the dieing issue, but I've never heard of it causing transmission issues.

It should be standard procedure for all 7.3 owners to carry a spare CPS in the glovebox. Riffraff Diesel: Motorcraft CPS 94.5-03

Hopefully that solves your issue.

Sorry for the late replies and thank for your guys help, I'm fairly confident Its a CPS issue, drove the truck all week with O/D off cause of fear, Thank God I mostly do city driving), Drove perfectly fine, Last night after work, stopped at whataburger, and the truck abruptly died in drive thru, But I fired it back up right away

I have a theory, the skip/jerk I felt on 55 -60 is the engine died (lost signal from cps) and fired back up immediately due from momentum/back push from the tranny

Anyways Im off in 1 day, this weekend anyways I planned to do maintenance to the truck anyways so ill report what happens when I change the cps.
