Rogue- I did a bit of sub-arc welding on pipe. Does 21 feet in diameter qualify as pipe? 2" thick stainless plate sub-arc. I did some dualshield welding on rotating assemblies, inside and out for x-ray testing. Way back when, my employer got a job fabbing some doors for the King of Saudi Arabia's personal bomb shelter in Riyadh. There were 5" fillet welds on the locking pin lugs. One time I was tasked with straightening a 24" dia shaft, give or take 16' long. It had to be within .003". Took me one try to "git er done".
21' sounds more like a tunnel, Must have been a monster positioner!
What was that shaft from? Three thousandths is a pretty good hit.
I did a little shaft repair in the boatyards, mostly torch and rag. No big deal and certainly nothing sonic. Factory draggers aren't all that tech, lol.
Stuck exclusively to the p+ piping on the nukes and in the nuke plants except for one 304 potable water line at Hanford. It took two days from cut to weldout to do a one inch socket weld due to inspections. That was enough of the glamor and glory. Went pipelining after that and tripled my money.
Keep your wheel position in mind when doing the dovetail. Mine wound up being just a bit too long, and while it never caused issues on the road or in parking lots, it did get completely stuck in my yard to the point I had to cut it off. Having a 6500lb generator on the trailer didn't help, but still something to keep in mind.
I made it 32" long and 20* down, it will get remade to the same length but 10-12* down this time. I also have a third axle to fill that giant gap at the back.
I will have to get some good pics and take some measurements before I actually start any type of addition to the trailer. I do want to be able to utilize it for more than just hauling a car. I may want to load my toolbox, or riding mower on it. In it's current configuration, it would be difficult.
Going to take all the fun out of it, but why not trade your trailer in for a factory dovetail? I bought a 40 ft flatbed from a guy who was getting out of the oil fields, Traded it in @ dealer for about twice what I gave for it and got the 35+5 that I wanted. Without getting into deck height I can tell you I can NOT load cars. the breakover is too much and they drag. But that's fine I don't haul cars anyway. It Does haul full size trucks
