I am no expert but I think that the AODE is the one with the computer the rest just called AOD is mecanical with a TV -cabel
I am thinking about going old school and just throw in a C4 and change the gear ratio in the rear to 3.54:1 but then mine is just for cruising and no dragracing
Hey Tom,
We put an AOD in behind our 351W in our 1950 F1. It has an overdrive making it a good choice for highway cruising. Most go with the cable driven AOD vs the AODE just to avoid the computer.
If you are going with more horsepower than stock you will want to upgrade the internals in your basic AOD.
o There are (4) Servo choices A+, A, B, & C. You want to avoid the smaller ones with the 1.5in. overdrive band as they tend to slip under stress. We went with the 2 inch wide servo with an upgraded Kevlar overdrive band.
o You also have your choice of many "improved" shift kits with
different clutch packs. We went with a middle of the road non-racing set from Baumann Engineering - they are a good resource for all things AOD. Check out their site with tutorials on the different improvements.
o There are also some solid Valve bodies available - they replace the pressure driven ones & are more reliable than stock.
AOD's are good choice but they will test your patience in getting them set up. They are driven by a Cable that is very sensitive - i.e. you get to adjust it numerous times to get it right. You will want a pressure gauge for tuning your AOD as you have to set the pressure just right or it will fail.
I'm going with the cable driven AOD. I'm transplanting the complete drivetrain from an 88 Lincoln into my truck. I hoping for about 25mpg going that route. good luck with your choice.
The AODE has to have a controller, which are around $400-500 from what I've been able to find. The regular AOD is cable controlled, and Lokar has a cable available for around $75. The electronic is easier to set up, while the other is a pain to set up... Depends on how much money you want to spend vs. how much time you want to spend getting it to shift right and not burn up....
