Unhappy Ac BIG oops.

Hello, I have a friend who is sitting here next to me who will be signing up with FTE and he wanted me to show him the ropes for his first problem.

He has a 96 explorer and his ac compressor clutch was cycling on and off. So he went and bought 2 20 ounce cans of 134a and proceeded to add it to the evaporator service port. Of course a lot of it sprayed out side of it as it did not fit well (duh). So he has no Idea how much he actually got in there out of the 30 or so ounces he dispensed. He is laughing at himself with me on this. He says hi ahead of time

I have access to good gauges and a reclaimer and vacuum as I work sometimes for a residential ac guru.

So can anyone give some advice as to what to do? I was thinking the evaporator should be changed out but I want a second opinion. Then vacuum and add new 134. So please give me your opinion and if anyone knows the high and low side specs this would be helpful.

The fill port should be on the accumulator, are you saying you filled it then pullled the hose of and the shrader stuck open and let the charge out? Suck it down with the vacuum, both ports, then fill on the low side port only with can tapper connected to the service line of the gauges yellow line. most of the time you can get cans in 12 and 16 oz and some larger. mix and match so that it equals the charge level on the sticker under the hood. Normal low side pressures compressor running is 25-35 and high side 200-250 psi. Hope this helps.

OK there is an evaporator service port close to the high pressure port and it is attached to the radiator. It is a black corrugated plastic tube about a 3/8 inch diameter that goes to the evaporator which is under the windshield fluid reservoir. If I remember correctly it has a schrader valve in it also. I have a 94 explorer and it does not have this service port. (I would like to knw what is it for?) This is what is written on it. It says "evaporator service port". Would he have damaged the evaporator by doing this?
Thank you for your help.

Oh, the port you are describing is the service port for testing the Evaporative Emissions system. That port is labeled "EVAP" not "Evaporator". It had a green cap, correct? That is in no way connected to the A/C system of the vehicle.

For the A/C system issue, you need to find the correct High and Low pressure fittings, use the recovery system to recover the refrigerant, inspect carefully for leaks, then pull a vacuum and ensure there are no leaks. If the vacuum holds, then use the professional gauge set and refill to the correct volume as mentioned by Makuloco above.

If you connected to evap test port no biggie no damage done. Here is a pic of the accumulator and the service port on it #2 in pic Hope this helps

Yes it was the evap service port. Thanks for clearing that up for me. He is glad to know he did not mess anything up. Thank you for the specs and part numbers. Cheers.

Oil Gauging

I put the vacuum on it and found no leaks until I took off the vacuum off the low port and I added 134 then when it was pressurized it leaked out of the low port side schrader valve. We tightened it and stopped the leak then this morning the lesk was back and the clutch is cycling on and off again. So i have to change it out.

My question today is how much Pag oil should I add when doing this repair. The charts here say it needs 7 ounces of oil Refrigerant and oil capacity charts - E to H || TechChoice Parts
but I know the compressor will retain some of the oil even when putting on a vacuum. I did not use a reclaimer as there was hardly any 134 in it.
Thanks

Hi again, first off this thread needs correction. His Explorer is year 2000. I am sorry for the mistake . The schrader valve just spins inside of the port and I cannot remove it. The port has a latex coating on it covering where it is connected to the part below it and I cannot tell if I can remove just the port or if i have to buy a whole accumulator.

It shows it can be changed separate, but I have never had any luck with that. I would just change the accum tank and be all new. Accumulator tanks usually rot on these anyway and are the source of the leak many times. If you change the tank figure 2-3 oz of PAG. From pulling a vac on the system and recovery everytime we do it at work it drain 1-2 oz of pag. If you are just going to change the tank out on your friend vehicle I would would pull a 45 min vac when repairs are complete and put in 3.5-4 oz of pag if I was working on the truck.

You are getting good advise from all here but remember the clutch cycling switch is really a low pressure cut out and has a purpose. A properly charged A/C system WILL still cycle regularly under certain conditions. Air conditioning IS all about pressure and saturation.
