trying to figure what gears I have.I own a 94 f 450 powerstroke with a 5 speed.the tag is missing on the diff.what is the most common rear end in this truck.thinking about changing the gears for better MPH.
pull the cover and count the teeth. you can jack up the rear and count the turns of the yoke in relation to the turns of the wheel, but counting the teeth is the best way to be definitive.

If you're going to pull the cover, the # of teeth are stamped in the ring gear. doing the driveshaft thing will work also. If you turn the driveshaft 10 times and have someone else count the wheel rev's you can get a pretty accurate reading. With an open (non limited slip) rear end, if you have one wheel on the ground and one jacked up, the wheel will spin at double speed, so a 4.10/1 ratio would equate to 8.2 wheel revolutions to 1 driveshaft rev.
that F-superduty (it is not a 450) has a Dana 80 rear axle in it, and the gear ratios were 4.63 and 5.13.
i bet it has 5.13 gears in it, cause the 4.63 was not a popular gearset.
if it still has th truck info tag on the driver side "B" pillar, post up the axle code and we can tell you what it came with.
Ok I am going to have to pull the cover and count the teeth.the Sticker on the pillar is gone to.what is the best gear ratio to use for mpg?I no longer need the truck for heavy hauling

Then sell the truck and get something lighter duty.
4.63 would be the best Stock gear for fuel economy, but 4.10 or 3.73 would even do better
