The axle code on the door is H3. But according to the Chilton's manual I have, they never had a H3 axel in a f100 in '81. Also, the tag bolted to the rear end says it has 2.75 gears, but the manual also says that they never put those gears in a f100, ever. Right now I have a mystery rear end and could use some help identifying it.....Thanks
You have all the info there - either the books are wrong, or the axle was swapped in. There's only one way to find out for sure: pull the rear cover off & read what's stamped into the edge of the ring gear.
somebody might have changed out the rearend 3rd member. if i want to check ratio i jack up one wheel, mark the driveshaft and rearend with chalk and , mark the wheel thats jacked up, turn the wheel one time exactly and see how many times the driveshaft turned. how many times you turned the driveshaft is the ratio.
Is it a possibility that the guys at Public Service specially ordered their trucks with that rear end in it? even though it wasn't available to the public?
I agree with 82F100SWB. Call a Ford dealership to confirm the code. When I did this way back when (might have been a different code), the Ford dealership said that the Chilton's was wrong. My 82 F100 has 2 75 on the tag, don't recall off hand what the code on the door says.
I beg to differ with that manual. I had a '79 F-100 with a 2.75 rear. Came with a 302 and c-4 automatic. It had the explorer package (stripe kit, hood ornament, tilt wheel, int.wipes). It was really light duty but a sharp looking truck.
