alright so last night i got the collector out all by itself, now i have to tackle the manifold bolts. ive already broke the head off of one of em and it looks like thats all thats going to happen to the rest. they are rusted to the manifolds.
what would you recommend doing? cut the bolts in the middle and pull the uppipes out and deal with the manifold bolts like that? i am unsure of how to go about this.
While this is late advice, I shot all of the exhaust-related bolts with PB Blaster twice a day for a week before the system was to be replaced. Maybe heat from a plumbing torch can help... but I recommend getting better input from somebody more experienced than me before using a flamethrower on an oily block with wires all around.
I have had good luck by cutting off the head, or in the middle (whatever is accessible), of the bolt and tightening down on the nut. This will draw the bolt out some to break the hold of the rust and allow it to spin free. Tapping on the "ears" of the manifold can also help to shock them and break the rust loose. Use may try this before resorting to the torch. If all else fails, use a combination of the above.
With the bolt still in the hole, you shouldn't distort it. You may if you heat it too much and then strike it. You have to use some "restraint". It you use heat, use a wrench to twist the bolt or tighten the nut, at the same time and it should come loose. I have faith you'll get them out.
Ill definitely try hitting it first! Thanks for the advise guys! Ill keep the torch in mind as a last resort. I have a college class at 11 and ill get back to this when I get home (I can't stand driving a nissan) and get this thing apart! Thanks for the advise and words of encouragement!
I had a similar issue when I did mine. I was lucky enough to be able to hammer down and up cause I have a van. mine were not rusted to the manifolds, but it was a pain for sure.
well i got the driver side pipe out, i ended up cutting the bolt nearest the trans, and i pushed on the pipe just a tad, and the other bolt snapped. so i got 2 stuck bolts. i got a small punch im going to try and use to get one out and the other still has the nut on it, so hopefully i can get those out.
A little late to the party...
But if im replacing them i just break the bolts.
I would probably break them if i werent replacing the pipes if i had to... and just put new bolts back in. Lowes, tractor supply, ace hardware...
i have new bolts for it from clay, but for the life of me i cannot get them out of the manifold.....
the pipe is now out but the 2 bolts are still there... the one on towards the bottom ive worked on for 4 hours..the one on the left the nut is so rusty it stripped the first socket i put on it.
i havent touched it since. i decided to let it be for today and i got some paint for my compressor housing, backplate and center section, I let the girlfriend pick the colors so ill let your imagination do the rest hahaha
