When mine gives a little clunk from a stop I know it is time to re-grease the slip yolk on the rear drive shaft... It is also a good time to replace the boot to seal it up and keep all the grunge out.
So how do I re grease this up? There's about 1/4" of play up and down (vertical) on there.
Normally you remove the driveshaft, cut the bands for the boot and pull the yoke off. Clean everything up, repack it with grease and install a new boot. With a 1/4" up and down play the yolk and spline shaft may be worn out. You may have to replace both which will require a trip the the driveline shop to cut off the old and weld in a new spline shaft. When you put it all back together remember to "time" the driveshaft making sure the u-joints are perfectly in line (parallel) between the shaft and yoke. If not timed the driveshaft will give you a nasty vibration.

I mean 1/4" total movement. Like 1/8" each way maybe*.
Looks really dry under there also, but I don't really wanna mess with anything.

Is there gonna be long term damage if ignored?
Just had my Shaft redone, New yoke, All U joints, the rubber ball thing at the front of it, And balanced. Cost 370 installed. Its never driven so smooth since I had it done. The play in the yoke causes Harmonic vibration that you may or may not feel. This can ruin you rear end and has been known to break the end of your T-case right off. I never noticed the vibration until I had the shaft redone and it was gone, what a differance. I had the clunk and a bad u joint. I greased my yoke but after awhile the grease wouldnt work anymore.
