What causes that typical noise when you go from neutral to reverse. It sounds like a "clank" and I can feel a little jump on the drive train but I am not sure what could be causing this. I check the driveshaft to see if it were to be loose but it seems firm. Then I check the oil in the transmission and it was fine. I don't know what else to check?. I get the same type of noise when I put it on Drive but not as loud. This seems to be getting worst with time.
The transfer case has a lot of giblets and gizzards in there and slack seems to come with them. I am a recovering Jeep driver and it did it also. When greasing the slip joint this weekend I noticed a little slack in the the rear end and much more in the t-case. I usually let the RPM drop to 1,000 if cold before putting in reverse.
I went through the same (I think) thing with my '90. Try greasing the slip-joint on your drive shaft. You can slip the dust cover boot back and finger-pack the grease into the splines, but it is better to unbolt your U-joint, pull the shafts apart and thoroughly grease the entire spline. Make sure you mark the shaft(s) so you fit them back the same way they came apart and re-seal the dust cover. I didn't think this could be the problem, but it was an easy fix and worked. There are other threads here explaining this. Good luck.

Reason: mispelling
Every time I've had a "clunk" in the drive train when going from Park/Neutral to reverse, it has been the UJoints. Check them out and maybe that will solve it for you.
Ok, I was messing with the driveshaft today and as I was trying to remove the driveshaft to grease it I realized that the noise "clunk" could be coming from the transfer case. Once I had the driveshaft loose from the rear axle I twisted it and got a similar "clank" noise but this play came from the transfer case... What does this mean? time to rebuilt transfer case or will it only need some fluid?. I wanted to check the fluid lever but I don't know how to do that.
