spare tire size doesn't match

Hey, I have a bald tire on the right rear. My spare tire is the original 235x75x15, which matches the door label. The last owner installed (4) 31x10.50x15, on different style rims. I found a tire store that has 2 used 31x10.50x15 tires for $60.00. Can I install a 31x10.50x15 tire on my (spare) 15" rim? I didn't know how far I can ran a tire that's a 1" shorter, on the rear of the truck?

Thanks for any info.

yes you can. it will look a little funny, but it is only a spare so looks don't really matter.

If you have a limited slip rear end I really wouldn't suggest it. Running different size tires will force it to slip which causes wear. If it's to drive kind of slow for not very long to get you to where you can get your tire fixed, sure. But unless you don't care about wearing out your limited slip I wouldn' drive much like that.

If you don't have a limited slip it's a much smaller issue. Still probably not something you'd want to do too much, but there's no big problems you're going to run into.

4WD is another issue. Don't do that unless it's really slippery and you need it bad.

I am confused here. Unless you made a typo, you said the tires at the tire store and the tires on your truck are the same size. If that's the case, they will work just fine. I wouldn't run the used tires if they are actually 1" shorter.

I guess I'm confused here also.... I read he was wanting to know if he could use a 31.50 tire for a spare...

If that is what he was asking, all I can say is it will work IF the bolts for the spare rack are long enough.. I know some seem to be longer than others..

Tires should be within 1/8" of each other ideally. If different sizes are in the rear then the spider gears are constantly turning, and therefore generating heat and wear. Being in the tire business, I'm generally not a fan of re-using old tires, however if there are no questionable repairs, repairs within 1/4" of the shoulder/sidewall, and no wear on the inside of the sidewalls (from being driven on low or flat) then you should be ok.

p/u 2 used tires for the back

I don't have a limited slip rear end. My spare tire which I just installed is a 235x75x15 which is a inch shorter then my three good 31x10.50x15 tires. So I guess the spare can't stay on for long. I found a good used 31x10.50x15 tire but it is 1" taller. Then my three 31x10.50x15 tires that are on my truck. So I had to buy the two matching tires for the rear.

Are all brands of 31x10.50x15 tires the same height? When you place them side by side, after you install them on a rim?

Different brands and models of tires vary in actual size. Tirerack.com is a good resource, look at the specs to see the actual diameter.
