Just got a flat. I have FX4 18" rims(275 65 R18) but my spare is the original, smaller 255 70 R17.
Is it OK to drive with two different size tires on a Limited Slip diff, or will I cause damage to the rear or bearings?
Also, my tire now has about a 3/4" cut in the middle of the treads. Tires have only 5,000mi. Should I just replace this tire or try a patch? I'm kinda leary of going 80+mph with a patch on a cut this big.
Thanks.
Different size tires on a LS is not a good idea or safe. If I was forced to use the spare,I'd put the spare on the front and move a good original to the back. I too have the FX4, 18's are not fun to find or cheap.
Yup. Since you dont have a LS in the front, its better to swap like kize said. I wouldnt run that smaller tire on the front for longer than you have to though.
Thanks for the replies. I don't think I'm going to drive it 'till I get it replaced. Guess I may inquire about a larger tire for the 17" rim. What do you guys think about the tire, should I get a new one w/ that size cut?
I cut corners sometimes on non safety stuff- but with tires my life is riding on them. If it was me I would replace it (with only 5,000 on your truck). You probably damaged the steel belt. Tire shops usually won't fix that sort of damage, but I'm sure you could find some shade tree character that will. What's your life or wrecked truck worth to you? Good tires are cheap insurance. Thats my take.
know this makes me want to go out and crawl under my truck and see what size the rear tire isI have the 18 in larait rims on my 04 screw and I never rally thought about the spare tire size
