So you swap a used transmission for a used transmission...... never really understood all that. They are not too hard to overhaul. A few special tools that can be made or purchased off of fleabay and a kit and you'll be good to go. If you want to make it better do the updates. If you can overhaul an engine you can overhaul a trans. Its a matter of reading up on it and keeping it clean clean clean.

The solenoid pack changed in 94. 95 has all the upgrades for a stronger transmission. It can be used in a 93 and earlier truck by changing the solenoid pack.

You can use one from a 5.0 or 5.8 truck as well as the I6 of course but it has to be a 2wd version, converting a 4wd version requires internal mods. That said you could be completely wasting your time swapping this trans as most issues people experience with them have nothing to do with the trans itself and can be traced to sensor issues. If however you have already done extensive troubleshooting and fixed any computer codes or speedo issues then ignore that last statement.

Well that's what you need to do first, this transmission is completely computer controlled and most issues are related to sensor problems. There are plenty of examples on this forum where guys have replaced this trans only to have the exact same problem afterwords.

Of course they did.. they'd love to take $1500-$2500 out of your pocket for no good reason.

Don't bother taking the truck to a shop to read the codes, most don't have the tools or knowledge to work on them. The good news is you don't need any special tools to pull the codes.. just a paperclip and pen and paper. The short version of the procedure is insert the paperclip between the STI and SIG_RTN wires in the EEC TEST connector, turn the key to run without starting the motor, and count the flashes on the check engine light. You will find lots more about this in the link below, scroll down until you see "How to run a self test". Fuel Injection Technical Library

If you want to eliminate all guesswork go get yourself an Equus 3145 code reader..

Only moving with the shifter in 1-2, then being able to shift into D once moving is a classic symptom of a failed one-way clutch. Very common on the early E4ODs.

To confirm, put the transmission in "Drive" then push the OD/Over Drive Cancel button. If the truck starts to move, the transmission needs a rebuild.
