I have a 96 f150 5.0 4wd short bed with a automatic e40d transmission. My transmission went out on me and I'm have a hard time finding one for a 96. Would I be able to pull a tranny form a 90-96 bronco and put it in?
Hey, overposting the same question won't get it answered any quicker. Thought I would throw that out there for reference. Also, as a side note, when you're posting about your truck's problem, keep everything in that same post. Don't start a new thread because the CEL light is on now or something stopped working after the last round of test & repair. It helps us to give you relevant information if it's all in one thread.
Down to business. Just to keep things simple, compatible transmissions would be '95 or '96 Bronco I6, 302, 351, '95 or '96 F150/250/350 I6, 302, 351, '97 F250HD/350 I6, 302, 351.
'94's and older E4OD's would not be recommended because there was a Ford mod in '95 that moved the protection diodes from the solenoid pack to the PCM and the plug on the right side for the Solenoid Pack was changed.
Keep in mind that there are two xfer cases; manual shift and electric shift on the fly. Unless you're going to re-use yours, pay attention when pulling the transmission.
If you're going to this much trouble, install a new TC bushing and seal in the pump and new output shaft seals. Drain the TC, fresh filter with a Filter Retention Clip and do not forget to flush your cooler lines if you had a catastrophic trans failure.
Hope this helps.

Reason: Sol pack plug info
I would also install a new rear main seal while tranny is out.
I forgot that when I rebuilt the e4od in my 93 F250. It still
drips. At least give it a look.
