I have a 96 f150 5.0 4wd short bed with a automatic e40d transmission. My transmission went out on me and I'm have a hard time finding one for a 96. Would I be able to pull a tranny form a 90-96 bronco and put it in?
You're better off in the long run just getting your's rebuilt. With another used one, you have no idea how long it'll last, or if it even works to start with.
Before you go spend hard earned money and time on replacing the trans have you positively determined that the trans is actually the problem? Sensor issues are the #1 cause of issues with this thing so you need to exercise due diligence before spending a dollar on a rebuild or you could be completely wasting your time and money and still have the same problem.
The Speedo cluster going south can have a huge effect on how the transmission acts too. Had this happen to a 95 van I had with an E4OD. Replaced the cluster and it was fine afterwards. Too many tire size changes will kill the cluster, it's only programmed to compensate for 5 tire size changes total, anything more will screw it up and the transmission goes haywire as a result.
I was able to drive it for a little while but I had to start out in low and work my way up to drive. If I tried to take off in drive all it would do is rev and then kick real hard. Now I can't even do that all I have is reverse.

That's what mine did when the speedo cluster went out.
Do a search on ebay, you'll pay a LOT less than I did at the dealer 10 years ago. They hit me up for around $550 if I recall, I looked at the clusters on ebay recently and they were nowhere near that expensive. I may just buy one to keep as a backup for mine. The newer vans went back to the mechanical speedo's probably just for that reason. I looked at quite a few 98-2000's and they all had the older mech speedo cluster
