Well..Here we are 9 months later and I, with the help of a couple local FTE members, finally got the engine out yesterday. Put it on the stand to tear it down and heard a clunk in the oil pan....... Oh goody! Pulled the pan and found one of the bolts from the main caps. Rolled it on over and discovered the one next to it on the same cap had sheared, but was held in by the oil pick up tube mount.
Found the source of the knocking too.......... yeah....... it was coming from the spot where the crankshaft broke in half and was clearancing itself on the bottom of the #4 piston. So......... that's where I am. How's your day going?

Ahhh, shiite muslims
That sucks, Scott.
What are your plans?

Tried to rep you for that Cody, but I gotta spread the love around before I can hit you again.
Plans....... I have a friend that has two dead PSD's in a storage shed. Both with cracked blocks. First order of business is to get with him and see what I can acquire. Definitely staying as low buck as possible with this rebuild.
Cody..... Awesome dude. I'll get with you as soon as I figure out what I've got.

Yeah. me too. All it really did was shave the bottom of the #4 piston. Didn't even break it. I suppose I'm lucky it let go just off idle.
I gave Cody a tap. Counterweights do this? I hadn't seen it before... on any engine. Damn cookie88, you are seriously having a rough year. I had that last year.
As far as I can tell the block is good. Haven't got it pulled all the way apart yet. The bearing spun under that cap and one of the bolts sheared, so I'll have to get it line bored and the usual prep work done.... But at the moment I'm saying the block is salvageable.
Mods are relatively mild. Little 160 sticks with an adrenaline HPOP and a 38r. Nothing crank shattering.
My theory is something interfered with that cap getting properly torqued.. I figure the first bolt had to have fallen out to allow the cap to walk enough to shear the second bolt. After that there was plenty of slack for that crank to walk around and destroy itself.
Sucks Scott. Never seen anything like that without the side of the block windowed. I had a BBC once that keep breaking valve spring, push rods and rockers till I fixed the problem. I to was lucky it always seemed to do it at a light or idling. Many many years ago.

I had that happen once on a '68 Ford 302 4bbl engine in my '82 F100 Flareside. The crankshaft broke behind the front main, in the same area, and continued to run, but with a knock. Happened on a Friday. Pulled the engine and swapped cranks that weekend. Times were simpler back then. You've heard of a two piece rear main seals? I had a two piece crank.
