Ok so I think I have been convinced to do a 3g switch. I do not want to get it from a junk yard you can if you want but I just don't want to.

Looks decent, what are you running in your truck currently? I've read some of the conversion threads and they had to clock the housing so that it would fit better in the bracket. 160 amps seems a little excessive unless you are running a decent amount of add on's or a big sound system. Have you checked your local part houses? you might get a better deal.

I'm running the stock 60 amp alternator. I also thought that 160amps was a bit excessive but a talked to the Alterstart guy and he said: "This one will supply amperage only as needed. It has a great low end capability. Idle output capability is double the 1g you have now. The 3G has extra heavy duty electronics for extreme use. So, when used with a light load. It will be on coast and will live for years."
I have a camper special with dual batteries and have a deep cycle on the camper side which I use for my camper and the 60 amp one isn't cutting it. This one does 75amps at a 800rpm idle
It looks like a nice alt and on the plus side it comes with the pully and wiring. My son just ordered one from these folks for his 96 F250. RJM Injection Tech — Alternators He is running several high amp stereo amps and this one is working great. No more pulsing lights at idle. He told me that the tech he talked with at RJM said he'd have 100a at idle. Also mentioned that when you start reaching max output, the single belt can barely turn anything over 160A. I am thinking of going that route also. For a comparison, Rockauto has NEW a/c delco 3g 130a alts for $135.
I'm a fan of the above mentioned RJM unit. It's brand new and I've never had anything bad from that guy.
You can get a 200 amp unit as well.
ANY alternator will only put out as much amperage as required by your system. Having the seller point that out as a selling point makes me think that if I were in your situation, I'd spend money elsewhere.
I did a google search and most everything was positive, They have a 100% rating on ebay but most people give their feedback right away so that doesn't say much.

I don't see that as a bad thing he was trying to educate me or am I missing something?

Thanks for the info looks like there are many choices
Thank you everyone this place is great for getting answers
Times Two on the RJM products... same 160-amp alternator for only $150. And to reiterate what's already been pointed out, once you get near 100 amps with a single belt, that thing's gonna squeal like a pig. It usually occurs at start-up, and it's pretty tough on belt longevity. Good luck, and let us know what you wind up with.
