hey guys another question for ya. i figured since i already have my t case off i wanted to clean and paint it so whats the best cleaner to cut thru all the grease and grime?
Gasoline or mineral spirits beats any of the green or purple or chartreuse cleaners any day. Pretty sure those are cheaper thank the colored cleaners as well; Avoid Walmart's version of "Mineral spirits."
It claims it's 60% renewable...but the renewable content is water.
I don't know what state of apart yours is in, but I had all the covers, seal retainers, etc off. I soaked those in gasoline by themselves for a few days, then blasted and cleared the aluminum pieces (Not necessary to blast, I just do because I can). Took the mostly stripped down case and put it in a big bucket, poured some gasoline, and went to town with a couple scrub brushes. Use something other than a wire brush if you go with gas, because you don't want any chance of sparks.
After cleaning I blew it out with compressed air to make sure all the fuel was evaporated, them assembled. Right before I painted, I wiped the whole thing down with acetone to remove any grease/grime/silicone that made it onto the case.
I forgot to mention, before I tore anything down I sprayed it down a few times with a solution of Diesel , dish soap, and water to degrease, and then hit it with the pressure washer hooked up to a hot water line. I did three sets of soak and wash. Make sure it you're pressure washing that you plug the speedo gear hole.
