FYI, each thread has a date associated with it and this one is from 2013. Also, that user hasn’t been here since then. Doubtful you’ll get an answer. Use the search bar at the top of the forum and you’ll find all sorts of more recent posts on tire sizes. Also, there’s a tech folder that has tire reviews that aren’t super up to date, but probably newer than 2013.
This forum is a great resource, so dig around and I bet you’ll find all sorts of great info!

After driving my 305/70/16s through some deeper mudd yesterday, man so much better than the 245/75/16s i had before, always felt like i was on ice skates, and i could feel them slipping and pretty much knew if i came to a stop i would be stuck.
The 305/70/16s combined with the 16x10 -25 offset wheels i put them on made a huge difference to ride, traction, and especially going through the mudd, now it feels like mudd is no longer a problem, and it was flour dirt mud, not the hard pack dirt.
And yes i know this is a dead thread, just thought i would reply for the person who resurrected it, so hopefully they get their answer.

I run 285/75/16 Michelin LTX MS on 2001 Excursion 4x4 PSD.
No downside to the larger than stock size. I rarely tow and no real off roading so IDK about that.
Upside seems to be much longer tire life and better ride on stock rims. Averaging about 80k per set of tires. The 265/75/16 oem size about 1/2 that.
I know the suspension did not get any newer as the years wore on. The only thing I can think of is that I always have run 60-65 lbs of air with the larger size. The back tires about 55 to 60 lbs.
When the truck was newer I used about 4 or 5 sets of 265 tires and got much less tire life. I may have been using pressures about 10lbs less, chasing a smoother ride.
In retrospect, the flex in the tires may have been more and caused wear issues resulting in shorter tire life. Or maybe the switch to Michelin and the 285 width helped.
I am in the market for new tires in the next 10k or so. Will definitely go for the 285/75/16 again.
Just my experience
